What is a Seborrheic Keratosis?
A seborrheic keratosis is a brown or black wart-like lesion that can appear during adulthood as a usual sign of aging. These benign growths can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the back, chest, shoulders, and face. They can look scaly, slightly raised, or waxy.
While benign, it is best to get your seborrheic keratosis checked by a skin cancer doctor, especially if you experience a rapid change. Patients tend to opt for removal when the lesion feels irritating, uncomfortable, or cosmetically unappealing.
Benefits of Removing a Seborrheic Keratosis
There are a handful of benefits of removing a seborrheic keratosis–particularly if they are causing you any grief or are presenting unusual rapid changes. Key benefits include:
- Improved Comfort
Seborrheic keratosis, often itchy or uncomfortable, can become even more irritating if left untreated, particularly if it rubs on clothing or jewellery. Removing this problem is an easy way to restore general comfort. - Peace Of Mind
These growths can often be mistaken for more serious skin issues such as cancer. Removing the lesion and analysis at the labs can confirm your diagnosis and ensure it isn’t something more sinister. - Limiting Growth
Eliminating the lesions means they won’t grow larger over time. It also allows you to avoid them from becoming more prominent or troublesome.
How do you Remove a Seborrheic Keratosis?
Our doctors can remove seborrheic keratoses through a range of treatment options. After examining the lesion to determine the best procedure, these options could be:
Ellman Pelleve Electrosurgery (Mulgrave Clinic Only)
This medical device uses radiofrequency electrocautery to offer precise removal while limiting intervention to unaffected tissue nearby. Firstly, a local anaesthetic is administered to numb the site. The Ellman Pelleve Electrosurgery limits bleeding and inflammation by cauterising blood vessels. This procedure lowers the risk of infection and leaves a fantastic cosmetic result for most seborrheic keratoses. Note that this treatment is only available at our Mulgrave clinic.
Cryotherapy
This minimally invasive treatment consists of spraying the seborrheic keratosis with liquid nitrogen. You may have heard cryotherapy referred to as ‘freezing’ or ‘lesion zapping.’ This may require multiple sprays over some weeks until the lesion completely falls off.
Should I get a Skin Cancer Check for Seborrheic Keratosis?
If you suddenly experience any changes in your skin, such as the appearance of seborrheic keratosis’, mole changes, or a sore that won’t heal, book in for a skin cancer check as soon as possible.
Getting a skin check once a year is a great way to ensure your skin is healthy. The sooner you start, the better you will be in the long run, as early intervention leads to better outcomes.
