What is a Wart?

A wart is a benign lesion caused by strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a contagion. The virus stimulates extra cells to grow, making warts appear as thickened skin lesions. However, they can differ in appearance and can develop anywhere on the body. Mostly harmless, warts tend to grow on the hands or feet, and some can disappear without intervention over time.

How Does Someone Contract a Wart?

When broken or weakened skin is exposed to a wart, the virus can spread to that skin surface. It’s also possible to contract warts by touching objects or surfaces that have been in contact with the virus, including towels or floors in communal areas like swimming pools or gym showers.

Once the virus has made its way into the upper layers of the skin, a wart begins to develop. It’s worth noting that susceptibility to wart viruses varies amongst individuals, so not everyone will develop a wart even if they come into contact with HPV. Regular hand washing and keeping cuts or broken skin covered can help reduce the risk of contracting warts. Maintaining good hygiene practices can help reduce the risk of spreading or contracting this viral lesion.

Benefits of Removing a Wart

Opting to extract a wart can significantly improve comfort and well-being. Below are some benefits of wart removal.

  • Improved Comfort
Warts can be irritating when participating in a regular daily routine. Removing the lesion and giving it time to heal properly can relieve the wart’s annoyance, optimising comfort.
  • Cosmetic Appearance
Some warts can be unsightly. Removal can improve the general appearance and boost self-confidence in those who are conscious of the lesion’s appearance.
  • Reduce Transmission
Removing a wart reduces the risk of transmission, helping to protect loved ones and the wider community from contracting the virus.
  • Complications Prevention
Warts can indirectly impact other areas of your body, potentially resulting in additional health issues. For instance, you may be reluctant to place pressure on a wart-afflicted foot. This can lead to an improper posture. Over time, this compensatory stance may develop discomfort in various other parts of the body due to the uneven distribution of weight. Removing the wart can ultimately lead to a better posture in the long run.

How Do You Remove a Wart?

There are a few ways to safely remove a wart. The chosen procedure depends on various factors, such as the size of the wart, the location on your body, and your personal preference. When you visit the Advanced Skin Cancer Centre, the doctor will examine the lesion and identify the most suitable treatment moving forward. Treatment options include:

Cosmetic Mole Removal - Advanced Skin Cancer Centre

Ellman Pelleve Electrosurgery (Mulgrave Centre Only)

This device employs radiofrequency electrocautery for precise removal, minimising harm to nearby tissue. After using local anaesthesia to mitigate pain, it cauterises blood vessels to reduce bleeding, inflammation, and generally leads to an optimal cosmetic result. This procedure lowers the risk of infection and is an excellent removal option for most warts. Please note that this treatment is only available at our Mulgrave clinic

Excision

This minor wart removal surgery involves using local anaesthetic around the lesion site and excising the tissue with slight margins around the affected area to remove the entire wart. We will then send the wart for lab analysis as a precautionary measure to confirm the diagnosis.

Cryotherapy

Also known as ‘freezing,’ ‘liquid nitrogen therapy,’ or ‘lesion zapping,’ cryotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment to kill the wart. It involves spraying the growth with liquid nitrogen to essentially ‘freeze’ the lesion to prevent further development. This process may need repeating a few times to kill the root of the virus, which is often located at the deepest part of the wart in the skin.
