Leg Vein & Spider Vein Treatment

Understanding Leg Veins (Telangiectasia)

Spider veins, clinically known as telangiectasia, are small, damaged blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin. They often look like thin red, blue, or purple webs or branches. While they are most common on the lower limbs, they can appear anywhere on the body.

What Causes Them?

Spider veins / Varicose veins develop when the tiny valves inside your veins weaken. Normally, these valves ensure blood flows in one directio, toward the heart. When they fail, blood can pool in the vessel, causing it to stretch and become visible.

Several factors contribute to this condition:

  • Genetics: A family history of venous issues is the leading predictor.
  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Changes during pregnancy, menopause, or the use of birth control can weaken vein walls.
  • Lifestyle: Occupations requiring prolonged standing or sitting hinder efficient blood circulation.
  • Age: Over time, the natural elasticity of vein walls and valves diminishes.

Why Microsclerotherapy For leg vein treatment

When it comes to leg vein treatment on the lower legs, microsclerotherapy is recognised globally as the “Gold Standard” treatment. While laser treatments exist, they are often less effective for the legs because leg veins are typically deeper and under higher pressure than those on the face. Microsclerotherapy treats the “feeder veins” that lasers often miss, leading to more thorough and longer-lasting results.

Benefits of Spider Vein Treatment:

  • High Success Rate: Highly effective at clearing 60%–80% of treated veins per session.
  • Minimally Invasive: No surgery, no general anesthesia, and no downtime.
  • Precision: Targeted treatment that spares the surrounding skin.

How the Spider Vein Treatment Works

The “micro” in microsclerotherapy refers to the incredibly fine needle used, making the process relatively painless for most patients.

  1. Injection: Using a magnifying light for precision, Dr. Herath injects a specialized solution (a sclerosant) directly into the spider veins.
  2. Reaction: The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing the walls to stick together and the vein to close.
  3. Absorption: Over the following weeks, the body naturally breaks down the closed vein and reabsorbs it. Blood flow is automatically rerouted to healthier, deeper veins.
  4. Recovery: You will be asked to wear medical-grade compression stockings for a short period to ensure the vein walls stay compressed while they heal.
