What Is PRP?
Platelet Rich Plasma – or PRP – is a treatment derived entirely from your own blood. It is not a drug, a filler, or a foreign substance. It is simply your blood, processed to concentrate its most powerful healing components.
The science behind PRP has been developing for over 70 years. The term “platelet-rich plasma” was first described in haematology research in the 1950s, and by the 1980s it was already being used in oral and maxillofacial surgery to accelerate wound healing. By the 1990s, sports medicine physicians began using PRP to treat muscle tears, tendon injuries, and joint conditions in elite athletes – a use that has since become well established across regenerative medicine worldwide.
When a small sample of your blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge, it separates into its component layers. The layer richest in platelets – tiny cells packed with growth factors and signalling proteins – is carefully extracted. This concentrated plasma is what we call PRP. When injected into a target area, these growth factors trigger the body’s own repair and regeneration processes: stimulating new cell growth, boosting collagen production, improving blood supply, and activating dormant stem cells in hair follicles.
In recent years, PRP has moved into the aesthetic medicine space, where it has shown impressive results for hair loss, under-eye rejuvenation, and skin quality. What Does PRP Treatment Involve?
PRP treatment is straightforward and performed in-clinic with no downtime.
A small amount of blood – similar to what you would give for a routine blood test – is drawn from your arm. The sample is then placed in our T-Lab® centrifuge, which spins it at a precise speed to separate and concentrate the platelet-rich layer. This takes approximately 10–15 minutes. The resulting PRP is then carefully injected by your doctor into the treatment area using fine needles or canula.
For scalp treatments, PRP is delivered across the thinning areas of the scalp using a series of small injections. For facial treatments, it is injected into the target areas – under the eyes, along the nasolabial folds, crow’s feet, neck wrinkles, and other areas of concern.
The entire appointment typically takes around 45-60 minutes.
For best results, a course of three treatments spaced one month apart is recommended. This staged approach allows the growth factors to progressively stimulate tissue regeneration over time. Many patients begin to notice changes after the second session, with the most significant results becoming visible two to three months after completing the course. Maintenance treatments every 6-18 months can help sustain results long term.
Mild redness and minor swelling at the injection sites are normal and generally resolve within 24-48 hours.
How Effective Is It?
The evidence supporting PRP for hair loss is robust and growing.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery (Zhang et al., 2023), which analysed multiple randomised controlled trials, found that PRP produced statistically significant increases in hair density compared to placebo. Quantitative analysis demonstrated mean hair density rising from approximately 141.9 to 177.5 hairs/cm² following treatment – with no serious adverse reactions recorded across the reviewed studies.
A meta-analysis published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Springer Nature, 2023) confirmed PRP’s effectiveness in increasing hair density in androgenetic alopecia, with subgroup analysis showing particularly strong results in male patients. The authors concluded that PRP represents a safe and effective non-surgical approach to hair loss management.
A 2024 meta-analysis (ScienceDirect / PMC) reviewing randomised clinical trials similarly found that autologous PRP significantly increases hair density in patients with androgenetic alopecia, reinforcing it as a well-supported option in evidence-based practice.
For under-eye and facial rejuvenation, clinical studies report meaningful improvements in periorbital dark circles, crow’s feet, and skin firmness. PRP works in this area by stimulating fibroblasts to produce hyaluronic acid and Type I collagen, restoring volume and improving skin texture, while growth factors in the plasma also inhibit excess melanin production – addressing both the structural hollowness and the discolouration that contribute to under-eye shadows.
Is It Safe?
PRP is among the safest aesthetic and regenerative treatments available, for one fundamental reason: it is made entirely from your own body.
There are no synthetic compounds, no animal-derived products, no foreign proteins. Because the treatment uses your own blood – processed and returned to you – the risk of an allergic reaction, immune response, or rejection is extremely low. This stands in contrast to many other injectable treatments, which introduce external substances that the body may react to.
Side effects are generally mild and temporary – minor swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site, which typically resolves within 24–48 hours.

Enhancing Cosmetic Skin Lesion Removal with Ellman Pellevé Electrosurgery
The Ellman Pelleve is a Radio-Frequency (RF) electrosurgical tool used to remove benign raised skin lesions for cosmetic purposes. Moles, warts, seborrheic keratoses, skin tags, and other suitable benign skin lesions can be removed this way.

- In some cases, a mole may contain deeper pigmentation, requiring a minor surgical procedure to ensure complete removal
